How Much Do Instagram and Facebook Ads Cost? What Drives the Price

You set the budget for Instagram and Facebook ads and an auction sets the price. What drives cost, Meta's minimums, VAT for Slovak firms and a first test.

Instagram and Facebook ads have no fixed price list. You set the budget, and Meta spends it in an auction where the price of an impression, click or lead depends on your audience, competition and ad quality. For Instagram, Meta recommends starting with a budget of at least USD 5 and running the ad for more than six days. What one customer costs you only shows up in your own test.

Summary

  • You decide how much to spend. An auction sets the price of each impression.
  • The highest bid doesn't automatically win: a more relevant ad can beat a pricier one.
  • A daily budget is a weekly average. A lifetime budget is a hard cap.
  • Slovak businesses usually self-assess VAT on Meta ads. If you're not a VAT payer, you must register before your first ad runs.
  • Run a test for at least a week and judge it on cost per result, not cost per impression.

How do Instagram and Facebook ads work?

Facebook and Instagram both belong to Meta, and you buy ads on both through one system with the same pricing rules. There are four ways in: boosting a post from your Facebook Page, boosting from your Instagram profile, Meta Business Suite, or Ads Manager, which has the most settings.

On Instagram you can simply boost a post: pick a post, a goal, an audience, a daily budget and a duration. The ad then runs in feed, Stories and Explore.

The ad budget is paid separately from managing your profiles. What management costs is in How much does social media management cost. If you are also weighing search ads, see How much do Google Ads cost.

Who sets the price: you or Meta?

You decide the total spend. Each impression is priced in an auction that runs whenever there's a chance to show someone an ad, and every ad whose target audience includes that person competes.

The winner is the ad with the highest total value, made up of three parts:

  • Bid: what you're willing to pay for the result you want. If you're unsure, Meta can bid automatically.
  • Estimated action rate: the probability that this particular person engages with or converts from the ad.
  • Ad quality: based partly on whether people hide the ad. Withheld information, sensational language and engagement bait pull it down.

This matters for small businesses: a more relevant ad can beat ads with higher bids. A family bakery in Trnava isn't competing on money alone, but on how useful its ad is to people nearby.

Daily or lifetime budget?

You set a budget for the whole campaign or for individual ad sets, either daily or lifetime.

  • A daily budget is a weekly average (Sunday to Saturday), not a hard cap. On good days Meta may spend up to 75% more, but in the standard setup never more than 175% in a day or seven times the daily budget in a week. At €10 a day, that's at most €17.50 a day and €70 a week.
  • A lifetime budget is a hard cap for the whole run. Meta spreads it by opportunity, spending more on some days and less on others. It suits a promotion with an end date, such as a weekend sale.

You can also cap spend with campaign and account spending limits.

What is the minimum budget for Instagram ads?

Meta doesn't publish a single euro figure. Its minimum budget page uses US dollars and says minimums vary by country and objective, as well as business vertical, budget type, bid strategy, optimisation, currency and schedule. If your budget is below the minimum, Ads Manager alerts you.

The minimum isn't a sensible budget, though. An ad set usually leaves the learning phase after about 50 results in the week after its last significant edit. Until then performance is less stable and cost per result tends to be higher.

In practice: multiply the cost you expect per result by 50. If you can't spend that much in a week, optimise for an easier result. Meta notes that optimising for purchases may need more budget than optimising for landing page views.

What drives the cost of Facebook and Instagram ads?

  • Objective. Meta says your objective plays a large role in what your ads cost. A purchase is harder to get than a page visit, so it usually needs more budget.
  • Audience. An overly narrow audience can cost more, and Meta says ad sets with audiences of at least 2 million often perform better. A business serving one town won't reach that, and narrowing the audience makes sense where people live outside your service area.
  • Competition and season. Each auction pits you against every ad targeting the same person, so a busy season in your industry can mean more competing ads. Meta also uses the cheapest opportunities first, so cost per result can rise over a campaign. The same can happen when you raise the budget sharply.
  • Placement. Feeds, Stories and Reels on Facebook and Instagram can have different costs per result. Meta optimises for the lowest average cost across all of them, so switching off a pricier placement can make the overall result worse.
  • Creative and landing page. The quality and relevance of your ad, and of what people see after they click, directly affect the price. Meta subsidises relevant ads in the auction.
  • Tracking. If your Meta pixel or Conversions API isn't set up correctly, fewer results get attributed to your ads and cost per action rises.
  • Where the ad is shown. For ads delivered in some countries Meta adds a location fee on top of your budget: 5% in Austria. Czechia, Hungary and Poland aren't on the list for now.

Do Slovak businesses pay VAT on Facebook and Instagram ads?

Yes, but Meta usually doesn't add it for businesses. If the seller on your receipt is Meta Platforms Ireland, your address is in the EU outside Ireland and you're buying ads for business purposes, Meta doesn't add VAT and you self-assess it. If you buy for private purposes, Meta adds VAT.

According to Slovakia's Financial Administration, a Slovak business receiving an advertising service from another EU country applies Slovak VAT at 23%. If you're not a VAT payer, you must register under section 7a of the Slovak VAT Act before you first receive such a service, whatever its value. You then pay the tax but can't deduct it, so it's an extra cost.

Add your VAT number to the ad account and confirm you're buying for business purposes. Meta doesn't give tax advice, so check the process with your accountant.

How do you start with a small test budget and read the results?

Before you launch, Meta shows estimated reach and results for your budget. Then:

  • Pick one goal, such as messages, form leads or purchases, and check that tracking records it before you start.
  • Run the test for at least a week, as Meta recommends, and don't edit it during the learning phase: significant edits restart learning.
  • Don't spread the budget too thin. With many ads and ad sets, the system learns less about each one. One ad set with two or three creative variants is enough to start.
  • Judge cost per result. When you optimise for conversions, cost per 1,000 impressions (CPM) isn't a good indicator. Read results over a full week, for the whole campaign or ad set, not by the hour.
  • Check relevance diagnostics. After 500 impressions, Ads Manager compares your ad's quality, engagement rate and conversion rate with ads competing for the same audience.
  • Compare with your margin. Only you know what a customer is worth: it depends on your margin and whether customers come back.

Frequently asked questions

Are Instagram ads more expensive than Facebook ads?

There's no fixed rule. Cost per result varies by placement and Meta optimises for the lowest average cost across all of them, so compare both networks within one campaign.

What is the average cost per click on Facebook in Slovakia?

We haven't found a public Slovak figure with a published method. Auction prices vary by industry, objective and audience, so the most accurate number is your own, from the first week of a test.

Is VAT included in my daily budget?

No. Your budget doesn't include VAT or location fees, so your total cost can be higher than the budget.

Can I stop an ad at any time?

Yes, pause it in Ads Manager. You may still get a bill afterwards, but only for what the ad spent before it stopped.
